What
Our turkeys are certified organic by NOFA-NY
Certified Organic, LLC. Poults
are purchased from a hatchery in Pennsylvania and shipped to us on the
day they are hatched. We brood them indoors for 6 weeks, then we graduate
them to bottomless cages on pasture. They are in the cages for a period
of 2-3 weeks which acclimates them to the outdoors and provides ample
protection from the elements. When we feel that they are outgrowing the
cages, (and know enough to come in from the rain!) they graduate again.
This time to a moveable shelter that is surrounded by electric netting.
The netting provides a much larger area for them to roam, as well as protection
from any predators that might be in the area. Turkeys are aggressive foragers,
packing in the green stuff with great gusto and joy! The pasture diet
is supplemented with organic grains and minerals. The result is an incredible
tasting bird for you and your family to enjoy.
When & Where
We raise two groups of turkeys every year - summer turkeys,
available in August, and Thanksgiving turkey, available, of course, in
November. Pick-up dates in November are the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday
before Thanksgiving.
The summer group started out as 4-H projects for the Cortland County Junior
Fair for the kids to raise. We ordered a few extra in case our chicken
customers were interested - and that’s how we started doing summer
turkeys. We like to cut them up and brine and grill the breasts, and/or
slice for sandwiches. Wings and legs can be barbecued, or made into turkey
and biscuit, or turkey and dumplings, or turkey pot-pie, and freezes well
for those first chill fall days. With proper planning and used to their
fullest potential, turkeys can provide many meals and be quite economical.
We process the turkeys right here on the farm. Please click here for directions.
Pricing
Turkeys are $4.40 per pound.
If you would like your turkey cut up, we can do it for you for a $10 service
charge.
If you would like to learn how to cut up your own turkey, let us know
in advance and we would be happy to show you how - for free!
Need to Know
Turkeys come whole, bagged and with giblets. Weights range from 12 - 22
pounds, with the average weight being around 16 pounds. If you would like
a turkey, please email or call so that we can reserve one for you. If
size is important to you, then please try to arrive at pick-up as close
to 4:00 as possible. That way you have the benefit of choosing your bird
from as many as are available, rather than taking what is left at 6:00.
As the time draws nearer to turkey processing we will send an informational
update via email as to how we will handle many turkeys with limited cooler
space.
Birds
are purchased on a pre-order basis and will be available
on processing dates, as noted. Pick-up times are between 4 -6 p.m. at
the dairy barn
unless other arrangements are made prior to the date with which there
is a conflict. If pick-up does not occur and no prior arrangements have
been made, we reserve the right to freeze and/or sell the birds. As a
courtesy to us, if you know that you do not want your birds, it is most
helpful for us to know in advance. Most people have come and gone by 6:00
and it is therefore difficult to sell the birds unless we know in
advance that you are not coming.
We have a substantial amount of time and money invested in each group
of birds and count on that date for cash flow and budgeting purposes.
No-shows cost time and money, both of which are dear, so please try to
remember to make arrangements if there is a conflict on any particular
date. If you decide that you don’t want your order, it is very helpful
for us to know this in advance. We are happy to work with you on this!
