What
Our pastured
poultry is certified organic by NOFA-NY
Certified Organic LLC. Chicks are purchased from a hatchery
in Pennsylvania and shipped to us via U.S. mail. We brood them indoors
for 3 weeks and then put out on pasture in bottomless cages, which are
moved twice daily, for the next two weeks. For the final 3 weeks, the
chickens are large enought to roam freely in a large, electrified netting
with shelters to protect them from the weather. No more cages! This allows
them to further develop their muscle tone, and to bask in the sunshine
-and bask they do!
Pasture
provides, among other things, chlorophyll from the green grass. Chlorophyll
is a wonderful, natural detoxifier. Yellow fat on poultry and beef, extremely
orange egg yolks, and naturally yellow butter all reflect high levels
of chlorophyll in the diet. In addition to grass and insects, these birds
are fed a specially formulated mix of organic grains and supplements.
At 8 weeks of age the chickens are ready to process, which we do right
here on the farm. Proper diet, sunshine, grass and exercise make for truly
healthy and delicious poultry. We raise 6 groups of chickens, and 2 groups
of turkeys each year during the warm months of pasture season. Chicken
then, is a seasonal item.
Eggs from our flock
of free-range pastured hens are available usually year round for $4.00
per dozen. On days other than processing days the eggs can be found in
the self-service refrigerator on the side porch at our house on
2023 Preble Road.

Ordering
We
have ordered a set amount of chicks for each date based on past orders
and capacity. It works out best for us if you can order the number of
chickens and/or turkeys that you would like on each date as soon as possible,
in order to avoid disappointment later. If you are unsure or can't decide
how many you might like, order the higher number. It is much easier for
us to sell your extra chickens than to try to find some more for you at
the last minute. Orders can be reduced at any time, though the sooner
we know about it, the easier it is for us to sell them. Many customers
find that they like to order a second chicken or 2 at each processing
to place in the freezer for the winter months.
When
ordering, please
send an email with the word ŇorderÓ in the subject line. Ordering
via email gives us a reference document whereas telephone, or ordering
in person assumes a good memory, which is not necessarily the case! Please
follow up any verbal order with an email. Look for an order confirmation
email to follow. If you don't get one, please re-send the order.

Need
to Know
Birds are purchased on a pre-order basis
and will be available on each processing date, noted above. Pick-up times
are between 4-6 p.m. at the dairy
barn unless other arrangements are made prior to the date with
which there is a conflict. If pick-up does not occur and no prior arrangements
have been made, we reserve the right to freeze and/or sell the birds.
As a courtesy to us, if you know that you do not want your birds,
it is most helpful for us to know in advance. Most people have come and
gone by 6:00 and it is therefore difficult to sell the birds unless we
know in advance that you are not coming.
We have a substantial amount of time and money invested in each group
of birds and count on that date for cash flow and budgeting purposes.
No-shows cost time and money, both of which are dear, so please try to
remember to make arrangements if there is a conflict on any particular
date. If you decide that you don’t want your order, it is very helpful
for us to know this in advance. We are happy to work with you on this!
